Luis Vidal Butler
Luis Vidal Butler Luis Vidal Butler is world champion of body building and won his title at the World Amateur Body Building Association (WABBA) in Ekaterinburg, Russia on November 19 last year.  Prior to that, in 2007, he won the European Championship in Elzey, Germany. He is 39 years old and was born in Madrid. His mother is French, from Paris and her father, Luis´s grandfather was originally from London, hence the second surname of Butler.

Why did you come to live in Mallorca?
All my immediate family live here and at the same time I had the opportunity of becoming a business partner in the Elite Fitness Club in San Agustin.

How and why did you become interested in body building?
I used to play football for Real Madrid from the time I was 9 years old to when I was 21, but whilst playing football, I seriously injured my shoulder and had to have a lot of physiotherapy, which is when I really became interested in exercise and body building.

How long did it take for you to build your body up?
A long time. It is not just a question of maintaining, but also of building up and improving all the time. I began when I was 24 and I am now 39 and still getting better!

How often do you train?
I train three hours every day and I train six days a week, a total of 18 hours a week, but if I am competing I work out an extra hour and a half every day on the treadmill for at least ten days before the day of the competition.

What do you eat?
As you can imagine, diet is extremely important, with the emphasis on protein for building muscle, such as chicken, fish, egg white and tunafish. Carbohydrates are also important such as rice, pasta and vegetables. Olive oil and avocados are also important.

How do you know so much about nutrition?
Nutrition and body building go hand in hand and I began studying all aspects of nutrition at the same time as I started body building.

Why do you think you won the World Championship last year?
Sheer determination and hard work, but it was all worth it and still is.

What do you do now, apart from training?
I am a personal trainer and I give courses and training to teachers on body building and nutrition. I also have another Fitness Centre in Palma.

When are you competing again?
I shall be defending my title in Las Vegas on July 27 this year.
