IMGP2441_-_300_dpi_WebThe distinctive green and white flag of modern Andalucía dates from 756AD owing its existence to Abd-er-Rahman as before the battle that he won against Al-Fihri to take the prize of Cordoba and therefore Al-Andalus his army had not prepared a flag so a green turban was hastily wrapped around a white spear with the green signifying hope and the white peace.

IMGP2341---EWN_webWE live in on the Iberian Peninsula which in times past has been part of the Roman Empire, then the Visigoths, and was lastly under Moorish control. The ‘Moors’ were actually composed of two tribes, Berbers and Arabs which hailed from Mauritania (south of Morocco).

upturned_carA LONG planned visit to Cordoba very nearly did not happen at the weekend as the steering failed on the car last week sending it and myself careering into a bridge in Arboleas flipping it over leaving it looking like an upturned tortoise.

By coincidence I had read the day before that the Greek dramatist Aeschylus was killed in 456 BC by an eagle dropping a tortoise onto his bald head.

Rodalquilar-Castilo-de-la-bateria_webTHE Cabo de Gata National Park covers around 67000 hectares of land and extends a mile out to sea so protecting a further 12,200 hectares. The area was declared a Marine and Nature reserve in 1987 and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1997. The park covers an area bounded by Almeria City, Nijar, Carboneras and the Karst en Yesos Natural Park near Sorbas.

Sorbas-Tunnel01----Copy_webWORK started on the high speed rail link a year ago and the most visible evidence can be seen close to J510 on the A-7 at La Herreria. The railway will burrow under the Cabrera Mountains to resurface in the Cabo de Gata. Some may have wondered why there is a huge white roller coaster pointing towards the sky. Two parallel tunnels each 7630 metres long that are about to be bored. The two tunnels will be 26M apart and will have 19 connecting tunnels dug every 400M for maintenance and emergency use.

IMGP3216_webTHE time of year is upon us when the usual relative quiet is disturbed as summer hordes arrive. Roads along the coast get clogged up by holidaymakers intent on driving at a snails pace as of course we are all on holiday aren’t we so there’s no rush…Grrr. How many get that little shiver of excitement when the little rent-a-car sticker is seen on a back window and an overtaking opportunity is looked for? Inland is not immune from the threat either as Mr/Mrs Magoo very sensibly only use 3 gears in the hire car for the duration of the holiday and one of those is reverse.

IMGP2940_webJAMES CORDON the co creator and co writer of the popular television comedy series Kevin and Stacey is hosting a comedy chat show each night that ITV show a live football game. There is a distinctly don’t forget your toothbrush feel to the format and its all about The World Cup so that’s easily half of the population excluded already.

bigstockphoto_Carving_Roast_Leg_Of_Lamb_5189874_webWHAT a great combination, World Cup football matches up to three times a day, the sun is shining and importantly supermarkets are doing beer promotions. The Cayeula Supermarket in Zurgena is selling litre bottles of decent branded beers for a Euro. Murky Donuts are selling packs of Amstel cans also for only a Euro a litre.

P1-AQ937_NukeJm_G_20090731172132_webSPAIN has an important but often forgotten industrial heritage which means important buildings and artefacts slowly crumble into the dust. An area full of historical significance is the region around Bedar. In the past silver, lead, iron and copper were all been mined there with the last mines closing in the 1930s. In the nineteenth century even sleepy El Pinar boasted one of the largest lead mines in Europe.

El-Paniajo-pudding_webTHE Marques de los Velez castle in Cuevas de Almanzora was built in 1507 on the site of a Roman fortification that had itself been strengthened by the Moors hundreds of years previously to guard the region against attacks by Berber pirates. Yes pirates!

The castle is listed by the national government so is in good condition and well worth a visit as not only is there the Campoy Art Gallery also housed there are the Town Library, the Record Office and the Museum of Archaeology.

iris_watermarked_webSUMMER is here and we can all now start to enjoy life alfresco with less fear of getting wet or cold for the next four to five months.

Someone must have forgot to tell the Gods to turn the sky taps completely off because last Friday afternoon the heavens opened and there was heavy rain in the Almanzora Valley and the Los Filabres Mountains right down to the coast at Mojacar, Vera and beyond.
