FIDEL CASTRO showed his age by declaring that the CIA pays Osama bin Laden and George W Bush called on Bin Laden whenever he wanted to crank up the fear.  Politicians regularly offer voters apprehension in order to sell them safety but at this late stage Castro – who never needed to conjure up fear in the past - is trying to sell Cubans a conspiracy theory.

ACCORDING to Tony Blair’s memoirs, Gordon Brown was a maddening bully who blackmailed him into leaving 10 Downing Street and then lost last May’s election by abandoning New Labour principles. Typically, the ever-messianic, self-beatified Blair cannot see that he himself lost the election for Labour three long years after he resigned, leaving a toxic residue in his wake that will take years to reverse and disperse.

IRAQI ministries are already welcoming unacknowledged Iranian envoys and despite 50,000 non-combatant American troops still in Iraq, Teheran will eventually compete with Washington to shape the country’s future.  The outcome is a foregone conclusion and Shia Iraqis will turn to Shia Iranians, to the unease of Sunni Iraqis and the West.  The can of worms opened in 2003 is about to become a vipers’ nest.
