Four tons of drugs seized in the Algarve

• 26 Apr 2007 •

The speedboat seized by the Navy.THE Faro Judiciary Police (PJ) announced that during two recent police operations, 4.12 tons of hashish were seized and 10 suspects – seven Moroccans, two English people and a German – were arrested. The police also seized two speedboats, a lorry and a car. The first police operation was triggered by a radio message from a Navy patrol boat, which had spotted 2.5 nautical miles off the Algarve Coast, in front of Monte Gordo, two speedboats transferring their cargo into a small fishing boat. According to the police report, soon after the fishing boat had left, the Navy patrol boarded the two speedboats and six Moroccans, aged between 17 and 36 were detained. The fishing boat managed to escape, sailing in the direction of the Guadiana River. The Police located the cargo – 1,500 kg of hashish – at the Portuguese river bank and detained another Moroccan suspect.

In the second police operation, which took place at Olhão and Moncarapacho, the police seized 2,500 kg of hashish and detained two English suspects and a German. The drug was hidden inside a lorry with an English licence plate.

According to the police, two suspects, a thirty-year-old Briton and a German, aged 25, didn’t offer any resistance when they were stopped by the police officers; however, a thirty-five-year-old Briton who was driving a Spanish-registered Audi A4 tried to escape. He was chased by several police cars and stopped after a 10km-long pursuit. Police said it was necessary to fire several gunshots to force the driver to stop. The suspect was slightly injured with a gunshot to the abdomen. According to PJ’s Associate Director Jose Brás, the hashish was on its way to England from Morocco.

However, he stressed that the police couldn’t find any evidence connecting this seizure with the one made earlier in the week, adding that everything points to the possibility that the two different drug trafficking gangs were caught during the police operations.

The Navy also seized a speedboat suspected of having been involved in drug trafficking operations between Morocco and the Algarve coast. The speedboat was located 30 nautical miles off the coast and two Spanish suspects were detained. However, the police didn’t find any drugs inside the boat.
