General strike called for May 30

• 26 Apr 2007 •

CGTP: Protesting against the Socialist government.PORTUGAL'S largest trade union confederation has called a general strike at national level for May 30 to express its displeasure at the government’s economic and social reforms. The General Confederation of Portuguese Workers CGTP, which has more than 800,000 members, said the reforms are eroding workers’ rights and job security.

The Socialist government, led by José Socrates, has been conducting a series of reforms with the objective of adapting employment laws into a more flexible format, in an attempt to improve the competitiveness of the economy. The government wants to make it easier to hire and fire workers, who currently enjoy extensive job protection.

The labour organisation said the strike is also a protest against the Socialist government's austerity policies. In an effort to reduce the country's budget deficit, the government also increased taxes and cut health and retirement benefits.

Over the last two years, civil servants’ salary raises were also limited to a minimum. This strike follows last month’s massive demonstration in which more than 100,000 people protested against the government’s reforms in the streets of Lisbon.
