Far-right meeting cancelled
• 26 Apr 2007 •
THE leader of the Portuguese far-right movement National Front (FN), was detained ahead of a reported pan-European meeting of far right parties in Lisbon. The meeting was scheduled for Saturday, but it was cancelled after the police announced the detention of 30 far-right Portuguese militants for possession of weapons and racist activities.
The police said searches were conducted at 60 addresses in various parts of the country, stressing that they had been watching the groups carefully and were taking precautions to ensure that any gathering would not end in violence or disturbances.
The organiser of the event, the far-right National Renovation Party (PNR), recently stirred emotions by putting a billboard at Lisbon’s Marquês de Pombal square, encouraging immigrants to go home and “leave Portugal to the Portuguese.”
Just a few days after having been placed, the billboard was vandalised, and its messages and pictures were covered with white paint. The TV comedy group “Gato Fedorento”, has also reacted to the PNR billboard, by setting out another one right next to it, saying: “Immigrants are welcome. The best way to annoy foreigners is to force them to live in Portugal.”
Claiming that the Gato Fedorento billboard was an “unauthorised personal message”, Lisbon Town Council ordered its removal and fined the TV comedy group. | Return to Top
