Ryanair cancels Faro-Barcelona route

JUST a few weeks after its started, Irish low cost airline Ryanair announced that it has decided to stop the new route between the Algarve and the capital of Catalonia, explaining that the route wasn’t profitable enough.

The route, which opened on March 2 will close on May 7. Daniel Queirós, the president of Algarve Promotion Association (ATA), said they were surprised with Ryanair’s decision to stop the flights at a moment, in which several Algarve tourism organisations had already started promotion campaigns in Catalonia.

Last week, Albufeira had already started a promotional campaign at Barcelona’s International Tourism Show. Coinciding with the closure of the Faro-Barcelona flight, Ryanair has announced the opening of a new route between Faro and Frankfurt, with four flights weekly from May 7.

Daniel Queirós said that this was good news since the number of German tourists visiting the Algarve has now started to increase after years of decline. He added that this flight could help the recovery of this important market for the Algarve.
