Clayman Cup Family outing and fundraiser
• 26 Apr 2007 •
THE Canil São Francisco takes care of hundreds of stray dogs and cats. Most of them have been found in the Counselho of Loulé and after being taken to the local dog pound, if their owners do not claim them, they are dispatched to the Canil. Most of them will be housed there for the remainder of their lives.
For providing this valuable service, the Canil receives a small grant from Loulé Câmara but must otherwise rely upon donations to pay for vet and food bills.
Lilo Clauberg-Kranendonk is volunteer co-ordinator of the Canil, which she founded 26 years ago. Now with the premises completely full, she and other volunteers are worried how they will manage when more strays are referred.
“In the summer we often receive many animals,” said Linda Clayman, one of the Canil’s fundraisers. “People go away on holiday and leave their pets to roam.”
Currently Linda is organising a charity event at Jim Stewart’s Tennis Academy in Quinta do Lago on May 6. She would be pleased to receive prizes to be raffled on the day. She points out that for businesses their donations will be given publicity, whilst supporting a worthwhile cause.
The all-day tennis tournament – with the winner receiving the Clayman Cup – makes a great family outing in beautiful surroundings. Jim Stewart donates the premises at no cost, so that players’ entry fees and all other monies raised are given to the Canil. Tennis matches commence at 10.30am and continue until late afternoon. Lunch can be bought by visitors, as well as other comestibles including home-made chutneys and jams. Many other items for sale have been donated and again money raised goes to the Canil.
Raffle prizes already include two tickets to see El Divo in Lisbon, beauty treatments, restaurant meals and champagne.
Like so many of their fund-raising ventures, the charity relies upon a good response from the public.
An initiative, to encourage people to sponsor individual pets via the Canil’s website, has received limited interest. Pictures of any of the Canil’s cats or dogs can be brought up onto a computer screen, an animal can be chosen and a monthly sum donated towards its upkeep.
When Linda began the scheme in 2006, she had hoped that many animal lovers would have taken the opportunity to help a stray. To date only three animals receive a regular sum.
