Portuguese history and heritage
• 26 Apr 2007 • ON April 27 at 11am, Peter Booker will be giving a talk on the fortifications of Tavira. Recent archaeological studies have revealed interesting and rare features of Phoenician, Islamic and Christian military architecture.
In the 16th century, because of its geographical position close to Morocco and the Mediterranean Sea, the Algarve had difficulties in maintaining its security. This necessitated the construction of a complex coastal defence system.
Algarvian fortifications reflect three main historical periods; Islamic control, the Christian reconquest and later the need to adapt to becoming a colonial power. Peter will be following up the talk at a later date by a guided walk around Tavira.
This talk is part of a series of history talks on the last Friday of each month.

The five-star golf and spa resort, Vila Sol near Quarteira, is hosting a fortnightly lecture series on various aspects of Portuguese history. The next talk is on May 2 at 6.30pm and it will feature one of the most famous characters of Portuguese history, the Marques of Pombal whose impact on his time and on posterity has been so great.
Sebastião José de Carvalho e Mello, as the Marques started off, was a Jekyll and Hyde character who ruthlessly supressed the Jesuits, executed aristocrats in a barbaric fashion, reformed the educational system and planned the rebuilding of Lisbon and Vila Real de Santo António after the earthquake Dr Booker will explain how the Marques has had such an impact on Portugal and the Portuguese psyche.
