Anorexic teens wait years to seek treatment

• 26 Apr 2007 •

TEENAGERS suffering from anorexia or bulimia tend not to seek medical treatment until four years after first suffering the diseases.

This is revealed in a study by the ABB Centre for Anorexia and Bulimia in Malaga that confirms the average age for first symptoms is 16, while the average age of sufferers seeking diagnosis is 20.

Professionals say this is too long a period as early detection helps prevent young people from “falling into the psychiatric disease with the second highest mortality in Spain.”

Specialists say people suffering from the eating disorders battle with psychological pain as a result of poor self image, obsession with being thin, an incapacity for positive relationships and a deterioration of socio-working environment.

While anorexia and bulimia are reversible, they can become chronic, leading to severe physical and psychological consequences.
