Parents in a school protest over ‘no paint for 10 years’

• 26 Apr 2007 •

PARENTS of children attending a Malaga school where more than half the pupils are foreign are protesting that it has not been painted for more than 10 years.

But sources for the Municipal Area of Education that is in charge of the upkeep of city schools have been surprised by the protests and claim renovations costing 39,346 euros were last year carried out to the Practicas Numero Uno School  in Plaza de Constitución.

The headmistress, Mercedes Tous, confirmed renovation work was carried out in recent years, but admits more restoration is still needed.

The parents’ protests is headed by Cristina Pelaez, vice president of the parents’ association.

Situated in a former convent dating back to the 16th century, the Practicas Numero Uno School’s historic building once housed the School of Fine Arts where Pablo Picasso´s father gave lessons.

Out of the more than half foreign pupils among the approximate 200 registered children, more than 20 are from different nationalities.

Malaga Town Hall currently invests around two million euros worth of maintenance and conservation, an amount that was reserved especially for this reason.
