Many misuse the Morning After pill

• 26 Apr 2007 •

The SAS is one of the few public services in Spain that gives the pill free, with their figures indicating that most of the pill users are under 19, and 11 per cent are under 17, though it is also commonly used by women aged from 20 to 24.

Director of the Department of Health Services for the province, Juan Borrajo, says that four out of every ten women asking for the Morning After pill in the 17 to 24 age bracket do so “because the condom has broken.”

Demand for the pill has stabilised slightly in the last 12 months with the figures showing that in Malaga province 10,150 pills were prescribed in 2006, as opposed to 12,079 the previous year.

Currently two types of Morning After pills are available with women able to go to a private doctor and after seeking a prescription they can purchase a pill for 20 euros, or alternatively they can go to an SAS emergency centre where the pill is given free.

Although the Morning After pill is a valued means of preventing unwanted pregnancies, Mr Borajo says it has not decreased the number of voluntary abortions as women asking for the pill and those seeking voluntary interruption of pregnancy come from different social groups.
