Visitors flock to Málaga fair
• 26 Apr 2007 •
APPROXIMATELY 200,000 people visited the 11th Malaga Towns and City Fair held at a cost of 800,000 euros and including 164 stands from clubs and associations in Guadalteba, Axarquía, Ronda, Sierra de las Nieves, Antequera, Guadalhorce, Nororma and the Western Costa del Sol.
Occupying two main pavilions in the Congress Palace, the fair included displays dedicated to gastronomy, handicrafts and culture, with theatre and musical performances drawing large crowds, along with a throne that was used in the Malaga Easter Week processions.
The four-day event opening with a spectacular dance performance by the Marcos Vargas and Chloe Brullé Company, followed by an opening toast from the County Council President, Salvador Pendon Muñoz.
“We dedicate this event to the most important council project in the last few months,” he said.
“In short we want to give recognition to the change that is taking place in Malaga province thanks to the work of all the local representatives, with contributions in the improvement of infrastructures and services necessary for successful operations in every corner of the province. The commitments we have with the local councils and the citizens of the province are being brought together to improve public services, and this is shown as the Plan for Malaga Modernisation evolves.”
Also taking part in the opening were act organiser Sara Sanchez; the councillor for Tourism, Commerce and Sports, Sergio Moreno; vice presidents of the delegation, Juan Fraile, Antonio Blanco and Marisa Bustinduy; and the President of the Seville County Council, Fernando Villalobos.
Councillor Moreno said it was all-important to stress that the fair displayed “the characteristics of a province that we can consider the economic motor of Andalucia, thanks to the tourism sector.”
He additionally praised commitment within Malaga province to exploit the natural areas, gastronomy as well as the quality of hotels and accommodation.
“Andalucia has for the last 60 years been the leading destination in Europe with 25 million tourists, with more than 40 per cent coming to Malaga province.”
Sara Sanchez said the fair should be a reflection of the development and dynamism of the province, with this clearly displayed by the newly introduced Provincial Road Safety Competition aimed at making
both girls and boys more aware of off traffic regulations and road safety.
Other new events at the fair included the Malaga Is Taste stand at which the province’s agricultural and food products were promoted.
During the fair activities included numerous wine and food tasting, talks and cookery demonstrations by culinary experts, with many highlighting local ingredients including fish, rosemary honey, goat cream cheese, corn, pumpkin, avocado pear and fruits.
As a complement to these activities, the fair coincided with the Emprende 21 Seminar, attended by more than 600 people and dedicated to business opportunities in the tourism sector, with more than 30 talks covering academic, business and institutional aspects.
The seminar served to show the importance of local tourism with the city of Malaga currently boasting more than 145,000 beds and the number of tourist establishments increasing 93 per cent from 2001-2006. | Return to Top
