Ministry of Public Works to approve renovation of Atarazanas

• 26 Apr 2007 •

Take over: Previously Ministry of Housing.DECISIVE steps are being taken to redirect the renovation and building of Atarazanas market in Malaga. The Ministry of Public Works, who has taken over the project from the Ministry of Housing, has decided to hold a meeting with the Ministry of Culture during which it will agree to take on half of the financing of the project, with 1 per cent of the costs being paid by the Ministry of Culture, since the building falls under the title of ‘Property of Cultural Interest’.

The legal procedures necessary to begin construction and renovation of the market are expected to begin within the next few days.

Councillor for Trade, Purificacion Pineda, explained that as requested by the Ministry of Public Works, the city hall has sent all the necessary information on the agreement with the Ministry of Housing to carry out construction work, as well as information regarding credit retentions made by the city council in the last few years.

She stated that “those in the Ministry responsible for the initiation of this project have everything they need and they have informed us that the legal procedures for the work to start will commence soon.”

The budget for the building has increased to 12 million euros now that experts have checked the project; as a result, the Ministry of Public Works will invest six million euros and the remaining three million euros, will be funded by the city hall.
