Specialised recycling containers for batteries

• 26 Apr 2007 •

Used batteries: Safe disposal now available.MALAGA CITY HALL has installed the first 30 specially designed containers for used batteries. Up until now, recycling batteries in the city was extremely difficult.

Recipients for used batteries situated next to bus stops have not been used for years and in 2006 the Department for Environmental Protection even suggested that the batteries be simply thrown in the bin if they were not the button kind, which were proven to be the most toxic by a local paper in March last year.

Afterwards it was decided they should be taken to the Guadalhorce estate, the only place in Malaga where materials are gathered for recycling.

These new containers, easily recognisable by their battery shape, placed in different areas of the city, are suitable for any alkaline batteries from the toxic button kind to the smallest kind.

They are designed so that no other rubbish or objects can be placed in them and are made from stainless steel.

Specialised compartments allow the different kinds of batteries to be separated and they will be emptied every 10 days.
