Alfaz chosen for Scandinavian football pre-season

• 01 Mar 2007 •

Putting the boot in: The Swedish Malmo team in actALFAZ DEL PI will play host to 29 football teams from Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Switzerland over the next few months.

The teams will carry out their pre-season warm-up in the town, and their visit is being hailed as a blessing for the local hotels and catering business.

More than 4,000 people are expected to sleep in the town's hotels, just counting players and technicians, which will provide a much-needed boost during the low winter season.

This is the result of one-and-a-half-years of ongoing negotiations with two Scandinavian travel agents, which began at last year's edition of the Oslo Travel Fair. “There is a great demand for adequate installations to train and prepare for the season, which usually starts in April, by teams from northern Europe,” according to local Sports councillor Eric Svanberg.

One of the teams is the female Malmo side from Sweden.

“We are in the Swedish Premiership, one of the most important leagues in the world, and have won the title on six occasions,” says team manager Jorgen Petersson.

Mr Petersson also praised the quality of the area's sports centre, hotels, the beach and the weather.
