Black and White - Painting and Sculpture exhibition in São Lourenço

• 03 May 2007 •

Works by Rui Matos.ARTIST Jose Alves has already shown his work at Centro Cultural São Lourenço in various exhibitions. Most of his canvases are collages-decollages, works of great subtlety, resulting of the superposition of various layers of colours and materials, some being partly torn off uncovering some fragments of the lower layers.

José has recently created a new series of paintings, which at first seem to be white, but behind the white, a world of colour appears in transparency. The show will be focusing on this new series.

Rui Matos is a sculptor who works with white marble and limestone as well as black slate.

This exhibition will show essentially slate sculptures: thin columns of black stone, apparently fragile, raised from a white base or directly from the ground, like totems. The stone is carved and cut out, forming organic shapes. The artist’s talent confers on this rough and hard material a smooth texture, a nearly silky touch.

The exhibition will be open from May 12 until June 28 starting at 7pm, at the Centro Cultural São Lourenço in Almancil.

The Centro Cultural is open every day, 10am until 7pm, Sundays and holidays included. Closed on Mondays.
