4.9 per cent living below poverty line

ALMOST five per cent of the households in Malaga province live below the poverty line. Additionally, statistics reveal that 14 out of the 20 poorest towns in Spain with more than 50,000 inhabitants are in Andalucia.

The figures in a report by the Association for Human Rights in Andalucia (APDHA) highlight the reality of social exclusion faced by more than 400,000 residents - 31 per cent – due to poverty, with almost 7,000 of these having to deal with extreme financial problems.

Geographically Cadiz province has most households living below the poverty line with 9.4 per cent, with Sevilla next with six per cent.

Huelva has 5.2 per cent and Malaga follows at 4.9 per cent, with Granada and Jaen each recording 3.8 per cent.
