‘Builders to blame’ – UN

• 03 May 2007 •

CHANGES through global warming are expected to lead to more flooding across Europe and less rain in southern areas, including the Costa del Sol, which could have a very negative effect on the main tourism industry.

This was spelled out in a United Nations report that has criticised the construction industry in Spain, where the levels of the Mediterranean are expected to long-term rise by about 40 centimetres.

This will lead to a loss of beaches of around 20 to 40 metres, according to Arturo Gonzalo Aizpiri, the government´s secretary general for the prevention of climate change. The rapid construction of much of the Costa del Sol coast was blamed for many of the area´s problems with much of the building work carried out to cater for a growing demand for holiday homes and hotels.

In general terms Spain’s urban areas increased by more than 25 per cent between 1990 and 2000, with the UN noted that this huge increase is not showing any signs of halting in the near future.

Jose Manuel Moreno, of the University of Castilla La Mancha and part of the UN working group, warned that unique Mediterranean eco-systems could disappear as a result of the changes.
