Malaga closer to becoming European Capital of Culture

• 03 May 2007 •

Rosa Palomo: Performs at Malaga’s 2016 presentatioMALAGA TOWN HALL has received more than 100,000 support signatures from companies and entities involved in the field of culture to collaborate in ensuring Malaga receives the title of European Capital of Culture in 2016. They have agreed to commit to development of projects to contribute to this including concerts, exhibitions, and competitions.

The objective of these projects will be to “capture the friendliness, enthusiasm and excitement of the cultural events”, they will include scenic art, visual art, music, science and technology, literature, image and sound, history and traditions, as well as typical crafts. Taking part in these projects are the Visual Arts and Crafts Association of Malaga (Aplama) and the Multicines Alameda Teatro, which is offering exclusive screenings of European films.

The town hall has stated that they are sure these 50 supporting signatures will progressively increase as “society has become more interested in this plan to make Malaga a culture capital”.

The University of Malaga has also set up an investigation group directed by the professor of the Philosophy and Literature Faculty, Enrique Baena, with the main objective of strengthening Malaga’s potential as a capital of Creative Literature.

The Picasso Foundation will also be contributing so that Malaga can use the image of the artist, his works and his relationship with the city to boost its chances of winning.
