Vitelcom workers march on May 1

• 03 May 2007 •

IN Malaga, May 1 was marked by a march due to the crisis at Vitelcom, makers of mobile phones, and the bleak outlook for its 400 workers.

Thousands of people flocked to the demonstration instigated by the Trade Unions UGT (General Union of Workers) and CC.OO (Workers’ Commission).

According to the organisation, 8,000 attended whereas Local Police put the figure at 2,500.

The protesters made their way through the streets of central Malaga with the motto “May 1, for quality work and equality” demanding a solution to the work, social and economic conflicts in the province of Malaga.

The uncertain future of the mobile phone maker, which has accumulated debts of 180 million euros, was the main issue of the day and phrases like “For the Malaga industry, no to Vitelcom closure” were used.

At the head of the march, the general secretary of Workers’ Commission, Antonio Herrera, made a call to Telefónica asking it to assume social corporate responsibility because it “has been our exclusive client all these years”.

On the other hand, the president of the factory’s committee, Encarnación Castillo, indicated that there seemed to be good prospects, but until the situation has been resolved, they would not stop their protests.
