New free wi-fi boost in main shops area

• 03 May 2007 •

A NEW free wi-fi service means Internet users will in future be able to access information at street-level in the heart of Malaga´s top shopping area, including calling up locations as well as a directory of local phone numbers in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Arabic.

German company Amitelo Wireless, which is introducing its service for Calle Larios, part of Calle Granada, Plaza de La Flores and adjoining streets by means of small strategically placed antennae, is also anxious to extend its network to take in major squares and parks where users can sit.

Salvador Marín, the company´s technical department manager, says the service is of specific benefit to traders and tourists, and has maximum support from the Historic Centre Traders Association.

“It will serve to make the city better known since foreigners are very advanced in technological matters and always seek maximum commodities,” he said.

Initial connection opens a web page that includes information about Malaga, including a street map, bus times, main hotel addresses, plus the location of monuments and museums.

A main project aim has been to keep the visual impact to a minimum. “We could have installed large transmitters to have more coverage, but we preferred to put more smaller ones to avoid breaking aesthetics,” Mr Marin said.

Enrique Gil, a Malaga businessman, said the service will “help the city to be better known on an international level. The increasing congress tourists need constant connectivity to send and receive files and to be able to do it in the street makes them feel more comfortable than needing to stay in a hotel to do it.”

Meanwhile Maribel Santiago said that it was magnificent that tourists could now access inte-resting information in the centre of the city, rather than having to depend on a street map.
