Internet World Congress to be held in Malaga
• 03 May 2007 • MALAGA will be the centre of the 11th National Internet World 2007 Congress ,which is to take place from May 14 to 16 in the Fairs and Congress Palace, in the city. The congress is a must for those who want to keep up to date with all the news and tendencies in the internet world.
Nearly 100 papers will be presented, covering subjects including the digital canon; e equality, infant and youth browsing in internet; the digital gap or internet rules and the government; and, the elderly and their relation with the net. They will be given by technologists, marketing and publicity professionals, politics, enterprisers and investors. It is a great preamble for the celebration of Internet Day on May 17.
The Congress has been organised by the Association of Internet Users (AUI), who expect to receive about 6000 visitors and 1200 participants. The director of the Association, Miguel Pérez Subiás, explained that “the Association and the congress, together with the Junta de Andalucia and the city council, sets its sights on converting Malaga into a focal point of technological excellence capable of attracting enterprises and investments in I+D+I”.
The inauguration ceremony on May 14 will be about the present and future of Internet in Spain, and will count on the presence of Pérez Subías, as well as the general directors of the sponsoring companies, namely Correos, Cremades and Calvo Sotelo, La Caixa, Ono, Microsoft, Telefónica and Unicaja.
One of the main topics of the Congress will be how to reduce the digital gap. The AUI wants to bring new technologies closer to the people not connected and especially this year to the elderly, and to this end, the local council, Unicaja, La Caixa and the Junta de Andalucia, will give a session titled “How the Elderly Can Use Internet Testimonies.” The session will show this sector of society, the possibilities that the net offers, through experiences told by people who already enjoy the advantages of the internet to improve their health, to improve communication with friends and families, get information or contribute to their personal development.
The permanent controversy around the new Law of Intellectual Property, will also be present with papers headed “Study on Intellectual Property in a Digital World”, “Copyleft: Creative Commons, a Real Alternative to Copyright” and “Actions to Avoid the Digital Canon”.
Sessions dedicated to the government and e-democracy are another main topic, and are intended to inform on the improvement of information to citizens allowing them real possibilities of participation.
Because of its social character, the AUI have reserved a space for children and youths, and will present the address “Safe Browsing for Children and Adolescents in the Internet” offered by the Catalan Association for Ill-treated Children (ACIM-ECPAT).
The University of Malaga and Regional University Hospital Carlos Haya, have also thought about the internet as an instrument to improve the health of the citizens. It´s paper “Usability in Websites of Spanish University Hospitals”, included in the day, dedicated to Accessibility and Contents Managers, aims to show the possibilities that the internet lends to communicate with the public. This tool may prove very useful for sick or immobile people since in most hospitals, the limitations of this sector of the public are not taken into account.
Price for a one-day visit to the Congress will be 200 euros, if booked before May 10, or 350 euros for the whole three days. The activities taking place in the auditorium will then be free to visitors, congressmen and speakers, as will the prize-giving ceremony of the AUI, the sessions for the elderly and the encounter Enterpriser-TIC open to enterprisers and investors who have or who look for innovative ideas and need financing to carry it out. | Return to Top
