EU chief to host summit on troubled constitution in Portugal
• 10 May 2007 • EUROPEAN Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has announced that he will be hosting closed-door talks with other EU leaders in Portugal on the embattled EU constitutional project.
Barroso is organising the May 12-13 meetings in Sintra, with a "wide open" agenda. Commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen said. "It's a brainstorming session," she said, adding that
invitations would be sent to "a limited number of participants,” also adding that "the president is engaged in a series of informal contacts and has discussions in different settings with a whole range of people."
The commission has also said it will organise more such meetings regarding the future of the EU.
So far four participants in this informal meeting have been confirmed. They are the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, the Prime Minister of Portugal, José Sócrates, Slovenian PM Janez Jansa and the President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering. A source of Barroso’s office said Germany was invited because it holds the EU presidency and Portugal and Slovenia because they will hold the two next EU presidencies. PM José Socrates has already commented that one of the objectives of the six-month Portuguese presidency of the European Union, which will start in July, is to try to find a solution to resolve the standoff over the EU Constitution. EU Chief Barroso has been encou-raging behind-the-scenes talks between EU countries. The draft treaty, which needs unanimous backing from all member states, has been approved by 18 countries, but was rejected by Dutch and French voters in 2005. | Return to Top
