Residents demo outside town hall

• 10 May 2007 •

Demonstrating residents: Want more co-operation.Residents of Torreblanca held a demonstration on the morning of May 8, outside the town hall in Fuengirola.

ASTOR, the residents’ association, whose President, Brian O’Carroll, and Vice President Carlos Menendoz jointly organised the demonstration, is a group of approximately 700 members legally constituted since the 1970s in Torreblanca. The association´s aim is “to preserve our peaceful quality of life and defend our interests in Torreblanca.”

Around 150 residents attended the demonstration denouncing the destruction of the environment in Torreblanca by what they claim is the massive over-building of blocks of flats in what are purported to be on totally unsuitable sites, lack of control by the town hall over the ongoing building projects, lack of proper infrastructures and the alleged failure by Mayoress Esperanza Oñe to meet with ASTOR to try to avoid the confrontations seen at the demonstration.

O’Carroll and Menendoz read a manifesto which included proposals to reject the Town Plan of 2006 as illegal and over the limits specified by the Junta of Andalucia. They also contacted the European Parliament and the Defensor del Pueblo de Andalucia who are investigating the alleged abuses in Torreblanca by the Department of Urbanisuis in Fuengirola.
