Environmental crimes

• 10 May 2007 •

THE Wildlife Protection Service of the Guardia Civil (SEPRONA) detained 13 people in Malaga during the year 2006 for crimes against the environment. Of these, six were put under arrest accused of causing fires in the province, mainly through negligence. The remainder of the detentions were for offences related to pets and urban residues.

During the same period, SEPRONA intervened in an average of 12 claims a day for infringement against the environment, totalling 4,625, mainly for violating the legislation with regards to urban rubbish and building on rural land.

The aim of The Wildlife Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil is to keep watch on compliance of the laws of wildlife and environment, hydraulic resources as well as the animal, fish, plants and forest wealth and any other matter related to nature.

Numerous controls were established last year to control irregularities in the transportation and marketing of species of fish that were smaller than the size established by law.

A total of 224,047 tons of fish were confiscated in Spain last year, the most common species being clams, prawns, hake, octopus and sardines.
