Calling all Morris dancers on the Costa del Sol

• 01 Mar 2007 •

Morris dancers in England. For a number of years, the Mijas Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion has successfully represented Britain in the annual International Day event organised by Mijas Town Hall. As an added attraction, this year they are planning to feature Morris dancers dressed in their traditional costumes demonstrating their skills in front of their stand next June.

Morris dancing is an English folk dance dating back to      medieval times. Documents recently discovered by historians indicate that villagers showing early signs of bubonic plague were dressed in outlandish colourful costumes with bells tied to their legs. They were then sent to nearby villages to perform their macabre ritual, warning people off. Today, popular demonstrations of Morris dancing are taking place all over the world.

There are four predominant styles of Morris dancing, and different dances within each style are named after their region of origin.

Upholding British traditions, the Legion is appealing for Morris dance enthusiasts to help them promote peaceful   international relations at the Mijas International Day celebrations next June.

If enough dancers come forward, arrangements have been made with the Foreigners Department at Mijas Town Hall for them to present a display of Morris dancing on the giant stage in the centre of Mijas on International Day.

Please telephone Barbara Layte on 95 293 3032 if you can help with this project.
