Zapatero promises to bring

• 10 May 2007 •

THE President of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has announced his decision to “bring Marbella back to the law and the law back to Marbella”, as he will no longer tolerate “even the slightest real estate corruption” anywhere and those who practise it will be prosecuted.

This warning was given by Zapatero in a pre-campaign organised by the PSOE for the forthcoming May 27 local elections, who expressed his disappointment at the Marbella scandals.

He also visited the Malaga police station in the Cruz del Humilladero district where he congratulated officers, judges and public prosecutors on their fight against organised crime. He declared that in a democracy, the corrupt always face justice and the honest win, stating: “there are no shortcuts or miracles, but work, effort and decency.”

He went on to ask for Marbella mayoral candidate Paulino Plata’s support in creating a town hall which looks after everyone’s interests, not just those of a few, “however famous they may be.”
