Malaga Cathedral roof to be fixed

• 10 May 2007 •

Malaga Cathedral: Improvements to the roof to commTHE DIOCESE of Malaga and the Junta de Andalucia have signed the agreement for work to begin on fixing the roof of the cathedral – a project that has been delayed since 2004.

The repair work will stop the roof leaking and also the falling of tile fragments from the domes each time it rains. For years, a protective mesh has been used on the inside of the building.

According to Cathedral Dean, Francisco Garcia Mota, architects have already had meetings to decide which of four companies will work on the roof and which design will be implemented, the design ideas being finalised in April 2006.

The dean promised that work will commence “before the summer”.

The entire project will cost 1.69 million euros towards which the Ministry of Culture will be investing 825,000 euros (40 per cent) of the   total.

Of this total, the Department of Culture has contributed 534,699 euros (another 40 per cent) and the remaining 289,638 euros (20 per cent) would have been left to the diocese but will now be paid by the town hall.
