Al Qaeda cell
• 10 May 2007 • IT HAS been reported that 17 arrests have been made in an ongoing police operation against a suspected Al Qaeda cell.
The Guardia Civil are investigating the cell, from the Magreb region, which is thought to be in Malaga or on the Levante coast.
The new investigation follows a large operation in Almeria in which nine Algerians were arrested, two of whom were working in the Algerian Consulate.
They are allegedly detained for document forgery, credit card fraud, drug trafficking and bribery.
A team of Guardia Civil officers from different regions, including Malaga, Alicante, Sevilla and Madrid, are taking part in the operation. Reports indicate that so far, 17 people have been arrested and two of the detained are said to have links to the Jihad in 2005.
