Illegal immigration hots up along with weather
• 17 May 2007 • WARMER weather has led to a recent surge in the number of immigrants trying to enter Spain illegally aboard small boats, with approximately 600 arriving in the Canary Islands.
However, since the introduction of the Integral Service of Exterior Vigilance (SIVE) along the coast of Malaga three years ago, the problem locally has reduced, with more boats carrying immigrants detouring to less guarded routes including Motril, Almeria and the Balearic Islands.
Based in the Guardia Civil headquarters of Malaga city, SIVE consists of a radar and video camera system able to locate and give images of vessels and to provide detailed information including route and speed.
The President of Andalucia Acoge, a federation of pro-immigrant associations, Ana Maria Jimenez, does not believe the system is a long-term solution, saying that it will “only control the situation for a few months before immigrants choose other routes even though they are more dangerous, resulting in the loss of more lives.
“The reasons these people come here have not changed, which are poverty and marginalisation,” she adds. | Return to Top
