Forest fires cause early summer alarm
• 17 May 2007 •
RISING TEMPERATURES led to the first forest fire alert of the summer in Malaga after firemen from Velez-Malaga and the Guardia Civil were called to control an olive tree and forest blaze in Sedella municipality.
Fire also destroyed a hectare of brush and scrubland close to the urbanisation of Pinares de San Anton in the capital.
A meeting of more than a thousand members of the International Conference on Forest Fires in Sevilla meanwhile heard that most fires in Spain are caused by intentional burning of farm stock which gets out of control.
Vandalism and attempts to reduce the value of wood were also listed.
Meeting for the first time in Europe, the conference, which attracted experts from throughout the world, was also told that on average more than 20,000 forest blazes annually cause extensive ecological and economic damage to Spain.
According to the Observatory of Sustainability in Spain, each hectare of burned forest costs the nation an average of 2,200 euros, with an additional 60 to 80 euros added per hectare for every year of forest life.
The Spanish Government has stepped up its fight to prevent forest fires following drastic consequences in Galicia last August when nearly 2,000 blazes destroyed around 78,000 hectares of forest.
The current climate change which has had a particular effect on Spain with temperatures in the last 20 years rising1.4 degrees - double that of the rest of the world - has resulted in more preventative measures being taken.
Fire-fighting staff is continually being increased in high-risk areas including Galicia with firemen, Guardia Civil, Police, Military and volunteers safeguarding forest areas. | Return to Top
