"Coin celebrates Orange Festival"

• 17 May 2007 •

THE 11th edition of the Fiesta de la Naranja (Orange Festival) held every year in Coin when the orange season comes to an end, was a great success as usual.

The festival was inaugurated last Saturday evening by actors from the series ‘Yo soy Bea’ and people attending the event then enjoyed a flamenco show with music from Inma La Bruja and guitarist Juan Diego Navarro. The fun went on well into the night with performances from local artists of all varieties in Coin’s Bermudez de la Rubia Square.

The following day, visitors were able to enjoy two scenic walks through the old town centre, one visiting local mills and the other taking them to the famous La Curruca bakery to see how the bread is made in traditional ovens.

Dance troupes of all ages from Coin and all over the world could be seen on the stage in the Alameda Square and throughout the streets, performing typical dances in colourful, regional costumes. Meanwhile, straw hats to commemorate the event and bags of oranges were given to all who wanted them.

The town’s historic centre was lined with stalls selling food, agricultural products and handmade goods, as well as those selling items for different charities.

Food and drink flowed freely throughout the day and many people from all over Malaga came to join in the festivities and visit the exhibition of traditional local dishes.

At lunch time, wine, orange juice and orange salad were served to all present, but this was just an appetizer for what was to come later. At 3pm, hundreds of people gathered to get a plate of one of Coin’s most typical dishes, Sopa Hervia, made with garlic, asparagus, bread, oil and salt.

The day was rounded off with a prize-giving event in which the winners of the 9th Photography competition, with the importance of water as its main theme, and the Desserts Competition, all of which were made with oranges, received gifts and prizes from the local authorities.
