Baby lemurs born at Fuengirola Zoo

• 17 May 2007 •

New arrivals: Ring-tailed lemurs.THREE ring-tailed lemurs have been born at Fuengirola Zoo. Two of the newborns, who are already moving freely in their enclosure, are identical twins. This is the third year in a row that this endangered species has produced young at the zoo. These ring-tailed lemurs will live with two other species that are also endangered: the black lemur and the vari black and white lemur.

Visitors can already see the babies during guided tours of the “Island of Madagascar”, part of the zoo that reproduces their natural environment without barriers, making them the new stars. This environment consists of an island with lush, leafy forest and a 1,000-year-old Baobab tree more than 25 metres tall. The lemurs are very popular as many

recognise them from the film “Madagascar”.

The island itself is the fourth largest in the world and has an extraordinary diversity of unique flora and fauna. Unfortunately many are at risk of extinction so Fuengirola Zoo is participating in the annual conservation campaign organised by the European Zoo and Aquarium Association (EAZA) to ensure these plants and animals survival.

The zoo will be organising a series of projects to involve the population in protecting Madagascar including a photography competition with cash prizes and

raffles for trips to the island.
