ON May 10, an event, aptly named Castillos en el aire, was held at the Gibralfaro Castle in Malaga in order to award prizes to the winners of this year’s youth culture competition.
Every year, Malagacrea, an initiative established by The Youth Department at Malaga City Hall, invites residents of any nationality, between 15 and 30 years old, to enter competitions for different examples of culture including fashion, visual arts, video, literature, food, flamenco dancing and comics.
The evening began with a fashion show, followed by the prize- giving to the winners of each category. Canapés were served, and Manolo Carambolas, a flamenco display by Alcazaba and music from Dry Martina provided the entertainment.
Designers Javier Cortez and Joan Fabregas spoke to The Euro Weekly News about their win. Nineteen-year-old Javier, a student at ABSE School of Fashion in Malaga, said: “I’m very happy. I chose something revolutionary because I admire Napoleon and it signifies freedom. I travelled to Napoleon’s house in France to do some research for the collection. I am planning to do some more shows in Jaen and Murcia.”
Joan, who won an award for his collection Mi ser, mi alma, mi esencia, soy yo, mi huella, inspired by the fingerprint, commented: “The night was a big success. I hope to open my own shop in Malaga in September. However, funding for designers, only available from the Junta de Andalucia and the city hall, is not easy to obtain.”
Laura Brinkmann, daughter of local artist Enrique, attended the event to collect her prize for her photo series El encanto de un bailarin. She said: “I was very nervous, although all my friends said I’d win, but I didn’t think so. I’m very happy. Now, I’m going to keep entering competitions and hope to have my own show.”
The city’s mayor Francisco de la Torre made a brief appearance to promote his electoral campaign and he praised the artistic creativity of Malaga’s youth. | Return to Top
