Search for Maddie goes worldwide
• 24 May 2007 •
MISSING toddler Madeleine McCann’s name and picture have now been circulated all over the world thanks to dozens of websites created by people who want to help.
The appeal, set up by the McCann family, www.bringmadeleinehome.com has registered more than 100 million hits, raised more than 100,000 euros and is now identified as “The Official Website To Find Madeleine McCann”.
The Judicial Police (PJ) has also put the appeal “Help us to find this girl” on its website. As one of the main items on the website, the PJ provides a description of little Maddie, who has the distinguishing feature of the pupil in her right eye running into the green iris. The police are also requesting people with any information to contact them on the numbers 282 405 400 and 282 427 671.
In the last few days police have continued to search around Praia da Luz and a large number of possible clues were followed up. Portuguese officers have travelled to Britain to assist UK police investigations and British police officers arrived in Portugal to help in the search for the toddler who has now been missing for three weeks. Other British organisations are also helping; UK charity Crimestoppers have made an appeal to anyone in Portugal with information about the whereabouts of Maddie to give information anonymously on 00
44 1883 731 336. Crimestoppers said they became involved in response to demands from the British expatriate community in Portugal who wanted to give information and help with the investigation.
Crimestoppers stated: “Many of them do not speak Portuguese and they are very familiar with our organisation so spoke to the media about giving us information.” According to the latest data released by the charity, from the 347 international calls, 64 useful calls (actionable intelligence) have been received. Crimestoppers say they can’t give any details about the type of information or about callers but said they are receiving calls from the UK and from Portugal with some useful information which they have passed on to Leicestershire Police. Crimestoppers stressed that they didn’t decide to get involved in the case because of the allegation about the about lack of effectiveness of the Portuguese police: “No, this is not the reason we have become involved. The information we get is passed on to Leicestershire Constabulary who are the lead force in the UK on this case. They are working closely with the Portuguese police to help with this case.”
Crimestoppers also said that in this case, the substantial rewards on offer have kept the story in the headlines but it is difficult to say whether or not they will actually help with solving the case, adding that the payment of rewards does encourage crank calls but there may also be a nugget of information in there that will help with the case. They also stressed that less than three per cent of Crimestoppers’ rewards are paid out because most people do not claim them, showing that most people do not call Crimestoppers for the reward but call because they want to help stop crime. | Return to Top
