National Park a dump
• 24 May 2007 •
THE Sierra Helada, the mountain that stands between Benidorm and Albir, has been declared a “dump” by a local environmental association. They say that the slopes of the mountain where quarrying work has been done, have meant that many of the hills are precarious and unsettled and that they have become a dumping ground for unauthourised materials.
Residents, as well as the association, claim that the waste is producing gases that are affecting their quality of life.
The President of the Association for the Protection of the Sierra Helada, Alfonso Ayarra, is standing by the claims, calling the upper slopes “unstable” and that “the emission of gases is aggravated.”
The association has sent complaints to the Sindic de Greuges in which they state that the director of the park has not replied to any of the accusations made.
Despite a year’s worth of complaints and demands for analysis of the gases and a status report on the state of the quarry, there has been nothing done.
The association has reported that there has been no work done to start the regeneration of the quarry and that the administration supposed to deal with the park are doing so with the “minimum of interest.” They are shocked that there exists not one signpost to indicate that the mountain is a National Park, which means that people do not treat it as one.
They point out that paths are used for motocross and quad racing, resulting in untold damage to the wildlife in the area and a general deterioration of the environment. Ayarra has declared that new signs should read 'Dump of Interest.’
The Sierra Helada, whose name means Frozen Mountain, reaches 483 metres above sea level and provides some of the most fantastic views of Benidorm, Albir and Altea with Calpe visible in the distance. | Return to Top
