Hospital alert after four guards stabbed
• 24 May 2007 •
LABOUR COMMITTEES at Carlos Haya Hospital, Malaga have been asked to create a comprehensive security plan after four guards were stabbed in knife attacks. Staff staged a protest outside the hospital in support of their colleagues following the apparently motiveless attacks, which were carried out by a young, well-dressed Spanish man, armed with a Stanley knife and shouting that he was crazy.
The protesting staff also called on members of the public to support their demands.
Two police patrols, called to the hospital by people who witnessed the stabbings, arrested the attacker.
A 50-year-old security assistant was initially stabbed five times by the man, who was screaming and acting erratically.
Another security guard, 30-year-old Juan Ramirez, who was working in the Emergency section, also received several facial and throat cuts in a similar unprovoked attack.
He said two other guards were also injured when they tried to help colleagues.
“Everything went so fast I did not even have time to feel scared. The nerves came later when I realised how close I had come to dying,” he said.
“The man was not waiting to be admitted into the hospital and was not protesting about anything. He must have just lost his mind suddenly because he kept saying ´this is so that you can’t say that you hear voices’.” | Return to Top
