World’s largest ever chiropractic convention held in Vilamoura
• 25 May 2007 •
EIGHT HUNDRED AND FIFTY chiropractors from 85 countries gathered in Vilamoura in the Algarve recently to attend the 75th Anniversary Convention of the European Chiropractors’ Union and the World Federation of Chiropractic's 9th Biennial Congress.
The event, considered the world’s largest ever chiropractic convention, was hosted by the Portuguese Chiropractic Association and took place at Vilamoura’s Marinhotel. The topic for debate was the “Celebration of the past, present and future of chiropractics.”
Portuguese sprint athlete Francis Obikwelu was the VIP guest at the convention. Nigerian-born Obikwelu, European 100 metre and 200 metre champion and 2006 European Athlete of the Year, explained how important pre-race chiropractic care has been to his success.
“Chiropractics have been very important to my career, as these treatments help to prevent injuries and help me to speed up physical recovery after a major competition,” said Obikwelu, who had his first contact with chiropractics while he was still representing Nigeria, after meeting Canadian Chiropractor Dr Larry Bell, with whom he has continued to work until now.
Obikwelu added: “It has made a real difference in my sports career. After the treatments, it feels like my body is lighter and when I run, it feels like I am walking on a cloud, which really helps to improve my performance. But I’m not the only athlete using this type of treatment, as far as I know, almost all of my athlete colleagues from the US and Canada are currently working with chiropractors.”
Professor Lobo Antunes of Lisbon, the internationally prominent neurologist and author, was the guest speaker at the Gala Banquet. In his speech, he gave his point of view on the future of health care in Europe. Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves of the body, particularly those of the spine.
Treatment consists of a wide range of manipulative techniques designed to improve the function of the joints, relieving pain and muscle spasm. Chiropractic does not involve the use of any drugs or surgery. | Return to Top
