British tourist attacked at Vilamoura Marina
• 25 May 2007 • THE Vilamoura Police have announced the arrest of a 22-year-old, accused of having brutally assaulted and robbed a British tourist. According to the police, the suspect, a national of Guinea Bissau, a former Portuguese African colony, tried to resist arrest by attacking the two police officers that approached him inside one of the Vilamoura Marina bars.
The police added that the man continued to behave aggressively and even though he was handcuffed, he managed to break the police car’s window by banging his head against it. The robbery took place in the early hours of the morning, when the suspect attacked the 34-year-old Briton, who was walking alone through the entrance of the marina.
Three other tourists witnessed the attack and called the police.
According to the witnesses, the suspect violently attacked the Briton by hitting him on the head with a paving stone several times, leaving him unconscious. After being treated at Faro hospital, the man returned to his hotel the following morning.
The police said the suspect, who lives in the Vilamoura area, had already been detained on other occasions for robbery. Over the last few weeks, tourists in the Vilamoura area have been targeted by robbers on three other occasions. Just two days before this robbery, police detained two men, suspected of having stolen three mobile phones, a gold chain and 70 euros from two English tourists.
At the end of April, two British tourists reported to the police that their bags had been stolen while they were swimming at Quarteira beach. They claimed they had money and other belongings inside the bags valued at 7,900 euros. Two other suspects were detained on April 19. The two men were accused of having stolen 200 euros from a Brazilian tourist. | Return to Top
