Tourism authorities advise hotels and resorts to install video surveillance

FOLLOWING the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann, the Algarve Tourism Board is advising all hotels and resorts in the region to install video surveillance equipment to prevent similar cases from happening in the future.

The Praia da Luz Ocean Club resort didn’t have video surveillance equipment which could have provided police officers with all-important clues on the person or people involved in Maddie’s disappearance.

The RTA Vice-President, Jose Dias, explained that hotels and resorts are obliged by law to request authorisation from the Portuguese Data Protection Authority (CNPD) before installing video surveillance.He added that the law should be revised in order to ease the demands and simplify the process, so hotels and resorts can rapidly increase their security by using CCTV equipment.
