Abducted girl, aged 11, found after police chase in Algarve

PORTUGUESE police have found an 11-year-old Romanian girl allegedly abducted in Malaga. She was traced after a 20-old Romanian, driving a French licence-plated car belonging to her parents and reported stolen, was detained and accused of abduction and car theft.
The girl was reported missing in the early hours of May 19 after disappearing when she went to a car park to listen to music while her parents remained at a party in a restaurant. After noticing their car had gone they immediately alerted the police.
The suspect was detained after a high-speed chase between Vila Real de Santo Antonio and Castro Marim, in the Algarve near the Spanish border, Portuguese police revealed.It is not thought they had received information about the theft and abduction from Spanish police, but the man tried to escape after they approached him as he was driving a foreign car with a young girl inside. The girl was later reunited with her parents accompanied by Spanish police.
Her father, who refused to reveal his name to reporters, said the suspect was known to the family, and that at the party he was drunk and had said he wanted to marry the girl. |  Return to Top
