Marbella negotiates gorilla reserve

• 28 May 2007 •

MARBELLA Town Hall has contacted actress Sigourney Weaver and the Diana Fossey Foundation, of which she is president, for help in creating a gorilla reserve on the Costa del Sol. Diana Fossey was a pioneering woman in the protection of these endangered primates and their habitat in Africa. She was murdered in Rwanda in 1985.

Florentino Rodriguez a spokesperson for the Environmental department, explained that they have been attempting to get the project under way for some time. The initiative will be a means for the gorilla foundation to move their care centre to Marbella. According to Rodriguez: “Many other cities in Spain are interested in this project,” but, he indicated that Marbella has an advantage because of the city’s weather which is very appropriate for these animals.
