Flamingo ringing to start soon
• 28 May 2007 •
THE yearly task of ringing flamingos, in the Fuente de Piedra lagoon to control their migratory movements all over the world, will take place mid July. The delegate for the Environment of the Junta de Andalucia, Ignacio Trillo, said that about 8,000 pairs of pink flamingos are at present breeding in Fuente de Piedra, and the young will be born in two month’s time.
According to Trillo, the state of the lagoon is good, as rain has raised the water level, which now has 27 centimetres, two less than a week ago but 14 centimetres more than two weeks ago, he explained. The ringing is done before the birds emigrate, to study causes that motivate the different migratory movements. According to studies made, the flamingos travel first to the French Camargue, stopping in Murcia in Mar Menor, then they go on to Turkey, Italy or Senegal. | Return to Top
