Summer show

• 31 May 2007 •

AS of June 5, a Summer Show lasting for four weeks, promoting the paintings of Seegrum Lubcke, Tiago Oliveira and Jessica Dunn, will be held at the Galeria Atlantica, in the hotel at the Vila Sol development, in the Algarve.

Over 15 years, British followers of the art scene have shown continued interest in Jessica Dunn’s impressionist scenes. Collectors in the Algarve – where she lives – have recognised her unique ability to convey the atmosphere of the local landscape, its features and its people.

Her new series of grandly proportioned pictures (100cm x 180cm) include figures on jetties, promenades and quaysides. Smaller images of cliffs and seascapes suggest the rapid movements of the waves as surfers are swept along by light brush strokes on the canvas.

Spontaneity is the key to her work although as she described, “When I am not satisfied I rework the paint surface and often have several paintings on the go, moving from one to the other. The inspiration for my images comes from captured moments, observations from my travels, and depictions of family life against the vivid blue backdrop of the sea.”

The evocative paintings she creates use a blend of impressionistic and realistic styles, brought to life with brilliant   luminosity.

Europe wide interest in her work has resulted in exhibitions at the Florence Biennial International Art Fair and a solo show at the Eaton Gallery in London’s Piccadilly.

Her Summer Show in 2005 – seen at Corte Real gallery in Paderne – was picked out by Hello! Magazine, forming a three-page spread. It recounted her father’s influence over her work.

Actor Clive Dunn is best known as Corporal Jones in the long running comedy series, Dad’s Army, but it was his extraordinary skills as an artist that most impressed Jessica when she was young.

“He has encouraged me throughout my professional   career,” she said.

A fabulous exhibition open to the public on the first night – when the artists will be present and drinks served from 7 until 9pm – continues until July 1.

Vila Sol is reached from Quatro Estrados on the EN 125. Take the road to Quarteira, pass Aquashow on the right. At the new roundabout, follow signs for the hotel.
