Ambassadors golfing for charity in the Algarve
• 31 May 2007 •
BETWEEN May 25 and 27, Portimão was the diplomatic centre of Portugal. The town hosted the third edition of the Association of Algarve’s Consular Core (ACCAL) Charity Golf Tournament.
The “Masters of Diplomacy Golf Tournament” took place at Morgado do Reguengo Golf Course with the presence of 19 ambassadors and 12 consuls.
The ambassadors of several European countries were joined by diplomats from Israel, Morocco, Turkey, Japan, Korea and Canada, among many others, at the charity event which raised more than 10,000 euros for a sports programme for handicapped people and for “Catraia”, a Portimão-based Charity to support underprivileged children.
According to the Romanian Consul, Carlos Machado, who was in charge of organising the event: “This was the biggest-ever gathering of diplomats taking place in the Algarve. With this event we were able to raise money for two charities which are doing wonderful jobs in helping underprivileged children and handicapped people and, on the other hand, we believe this event was also very important in promoting economic diplomacy. The presence of such a large number of diplomats playing golf here will surely help to promote the Algarve as an excellent golf and tourism destination.”
Local authorities, including the Algarve’s Civil Governor, the mayors of Portimão, Vila do Bispo, Silves and Lagoa, as well as the President of Algarve’s Tourism Board, also attended the event. | Return to Top
