Algarve beaches fail to keep nine Blue Flags
• 31 May 2007 •
THE European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) has awarded 189 Portuguese beaches with the Blue Flag, 15 less than last year.
The Blue Flag rates beaches in terms of the quality of its waters, the cleanliness of the sand, access, lifeguard assistance and other criteria. With 46 beaches awarded with the FEE quality symbol, the Algarve continues to be the region with the largest number of blue flags in Portugal. However this year nine Algarve beaches have lost its Blue Flag. The Blue Flag is an exclusive benchmark for environmental quality awarded to beaches and marinas in 36 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, New Zealand, Canada and the Caribbean.
The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches and marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services. The Blue Flag Programme includes environmental education and information for the public, decision makers and tourism operators. To receive the award counties must submit their beaches to tests. This year the International Jury decided to award the Blue Flag to 2,628 beaches and 629 marinas in 31 countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Also evaluated this year were the composition of the national juries, the outcome of control visits in 2006, and the planning of control visits for 2007. | Return to Top
