Schools closing

• 31 May 2007 •

Primary schools like this one are being closed.THE Ministry of Education has announced that the official number of schools to be closed this year is approximately 900.

The Ministry’s Press Officer said: “The numbers that we have at the Ministry of Education point to 1,500 schools closed last year and about 900 scheduled to be closed this year.” Adding that the government has announced its intention to reorganise the primary school network “because small schools, or schools with few students generally have a lower success rate.”

In March the Minister of Education, Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues, had already said that the government was considering the closure of a considerable number of primary schools throughout the country. The Ministry of Education has been working with county councils to identify which schools would be closed, and to solve the   problem of re-allocating students.

At the beginning of this school year, in October 2006, the Ministry of Education closed 1,500 primary schools, justifying their actions with the grades achieved by students at those smaller schools were below national average. Approximately 11,000 primary school students that attended these schools were absorbed by 847 schools where the government invested 2.4 million through the county councils to cater for the boost in numbers.
