Corrupt ex-mayor disqualified

THE EX-MAYOR of Cuevas de San Marcos, Juan Francisco Arjona, from left wing political party, Izquierda Unida, has been disqualified for seven years by Malaga Provincial Court for corruption.

The offences took place in 2001, when Arjona, who was mayor, ordered work on pavements and water diversions on Green Belt land without Ministry of Environment authorisation.

He is alleged to have given a local man 10 days to take down a fence which was on a public walkway, with council workers then removing it in order to tarmac a lane, apparently without Ministry permission, with this leading to the town council being told to stop the work.

However, Arjona ignored this saying that the road state made it dangerous to pedestrians.
