Death-fall bosses face prison

• 31 May 2007 •

FIVE PEOPLE in charge of work on a site where an illegally employed Moroccan worker fell to his death in 2003 should be jailed, the Malaga Prosecutor’s Office has ruled.

The father-of-three fell to his death from scaffolding while working on the Jose Maria Martin Carpena Sports Pavilion in Malaga in preparation for the Davis Cup in 2003. He did not have an employment contract, and did not have a harness nor adequate footwear.

Amongst the accused are the former director of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation and the manager of the company carrying out the work, who could face four years in prison. Meanwhile, the foreman could face a seven-year sentence for breaking industrial laws concerning contracts.
